UMSU Act

The Manitoba government adopted this Act incorporating UMSU in 1975, although UMSU had existed in various forms since 1914. The UMSU Act sets out the basic legal rights and powers of UMSU, and takes precedence over the Bylaws, Policies, and standing orders of council. The UMSU Act may only be changed by the Manitoba Legislature.

Bylaw Manual

These are the official Bylaws of the Union. The Bylaws set the basic rules by which the organization operates, and where they are in conflict, the Bylaws take precedence over the Policies and standing orders of council. The Bylaws are overseen by the Policy and Bylaws Committee, and amendments may only be adopted by a two-thirds majority in UMSU Council during regular session (September to April).

Policy Manual

These are the official Policies of the Union. The Policies give direction to the operations of the Union, and includes UMSU's official position on several political issues (such as tuition fees and funding or sustainability). Where they are in conflict, the Policy Manual takes precedence over the standing orders of Council. The Policy Manual is overseen by the Policy and Bylaws Committee. New policies or amendments may be passed at any time by UMSU Council.

Campaigns Guide

These are the official Campaigns of the Union. The Campaigns Guide is not legally binding on the operations of the Union, but provides direction on the campaigns the Union has committed to. The Campaigns Guide is overseen by the Campaigns and Government Relations Committee, and new campaigns or amendments may be adopted at any time by UMSU Council. You can also find more information about UMSU's ongoing campaigns in the Campaigns section of the website.
