To date, UMSU has given out over $10, 000 in Undergraduate student travel grants.

CRITERIA for TRAVEL AWARDS

The primary purpose of these awards is to encourage representation and participation of University of Manitoba students at national and international academic events.

Eligible University of Manitoba undergraduate students are allowed to receive a maximum of one travel grant for each academic session.

Academic Sessions are:

i) May to August;
ii) September to December; and
iii) January to April

Each applicant is eligible to receive a portion of their actual budget for all travel, accommodations, registration fees, and meals, to a maximum of $500 per student. Each student may receive funding up to three times throughout the year (for each academic session), but will only be eligible to receive a total accumulated amount of $500 for the entire year.

We encourage all students to seek as many funding sources as possible. Applicants are encouraged to list all other funding sources; however this will not be taken into account when the application is being reviewed and grants are being assessed.

ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible for this award, the student must be a registered University of Manitoba undergraduate student at the time of travel.

Only those applications that include all the required documents will be considered. Complete application packages must include the following:

1) the UMSU Undergraduate Student Funding Application Form,
2) a cover letter outlining the reasons for attending the event (and any other information for the committee to consider),
3) a complete budget of expenses (for travel, accommodation, and registration fees), and
4) proof of attendance at the conference/event (ex. a letter from an advisor, a completed registration form with itinerary) and proof of travel (ex. boarding passes).

PROCEDURE

1. APPLICATION PACKAGE

The student must complete the Undergraduate Student Funding Application Form (PDF). This form should also include a cover letter outlining the "who, what, where, when, and why" of the conference; a detailed budget including registration fee, accommodations, and travel to and from the event; and proof of attendance at the academic event. The student does not have to have confirmation that they have been accepted for attendance prior to the time of requesting the travel award. If the request is awarded, however, the money will not be given to the student unless proof of attendance at the event is provided.

2. REIMBURSEMENT

All students must be registered U of M undergraduate students during the period of travel in order to be reimbursed. Cheques will be available to be picked up by the student at the UMSU office (101 University Centre) as soon as proof of attendance is received.

APPLICATION REVIEW

All completed application packages will be reviewed approximately once per month throughout the year, or as soon as the committee is able to meet. The complete application package must be submitted to the UMSU office no later than 30 (thirty) days past the date that the academic event/conference took place. Applications received prior to attending the event will be accepted and reviewed for funding, but all funds awarded will not be disbursed until proof of attendance has been received by the Chair of Finance.

Please note: We don't want to encourage students to choose more expensive means of transportation over sustainable means of transportation to increase their accumulated expenses. To avoid this, UMSU will provide additional funding to a student who chooses a sustainable means of transportation (i.e carpool, train) over a student who uses less sustainable means of transportation (i.e plane) to the same location.
