Do you want to have fun, get involved, have your voice heard and get to know more about UMSU? UMSU has a number of committees that you can participate in by getting involved in setting the direction for our students' union. Benefits of being on an UMSU Committee include: Snacks & drinks at meetings Official transcript notation on your University Transcript The ability to set direction on what UMSU is doing for YOU! Meet new people, gain new skills, and looks great on a resume! Committee Descriptions FINANCE: Finance is a very active committee. Members of this committee review the financial affairs of UMSU. You are involved in the UMSU Budget process as well as responsible for creating new full-time staff positions. This committee is also responsible for approving undergraduate travel grant funding. POLICY AND BYLAWS: Policy and Bylaws govern UMSU as an organisation. A bylaw is a statement that regulates the goals and affairs of UMSU. This is a very important committee that reviews UMSU's current policies and bylaws and proposes changes and/or new ideas to the UMSU Council. HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN: This is a great committee which reviews the premium and coverage of the UMSU Health and Dental plan. The HIP Committee also considers opt-out appeals. CAMPAIGNS AND GOVERNMENT RELATIONS: This is a good committee to join if you’re interested political mobilization such as University Funding and accessibility, student’s rights, social justice and local and international solidarity campaigns. This committee meets biweekly to work with the Canadian Federation of Students to plan campaigns that get students involved and have our voice heard at all levels of government and the university administration. STUDENT GROUP PROMOTION AND AFFAIRS COMMITTEE: This committee is responsible for granting UMSU student group recognition and sets the criteria that a group must satisfy in order to receive student group funding. This is a great opportunity to learn about 110+ UMSU student groups! ELECTION AND REFERENDA DISCIPLINE, INTERPRETATION AND ENFORCEMENT BOARD (ERDIE Board): Because this committee deals with UMSU Elections and Referenda members must be objective and impartial, and must be available on short notice. This committee is normally only active during the UMSU Election and Referenda and is mandated with hearing election appeals. ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY: This committee raises awareness about environmental issues, reviews UMSU’s environmental practices so that our students’ union is run in an environmentally-sustainable way and liases with on- and off-campus groups. The committee also sets directions on new environmental initiatives.
