UMSU provides its members with a health and dental benefits
plan, which was approved by referendum in 2002. The plan is a group benefit,
providing many services and benefits to students without coverage, and is mandatory
for full-time students unless there is proof of an existing plan for health
and/or dental.

In January
2002, students voted in a referendum overwhelmingly in favour of an extended
health and dental care plan. As a member of the Canadian Federation of Students
and the National Student Health Network, UMSU implemented a health and dental
plan designed by students to provide many important services, and cover
expenses that are, unfortunately, excluded from basic public health care. These
services include additional prescription drug coverage, ambulance coverage,
paramedical treatment, dental care, and more. Although UMSU advocates for
better public health care, it is important that students also have coverage
now.
All
full-time undergraduate students who are taking 6 or more credit hours on
campus and all full-time graduate students are automatically members of the
UMSU Health and Dental plan, and are assessed the fee on their tuition fee
statements in the fall term. Students already covered
by a health and/or dental plan through a private plan (i.e. parents, spouse, or
employer) are eligible to opt-out of the plan. Opt-Out Deadline for Fall 2009 Term is September 23, 2009. Opt-Out Deadline for Winter 2010 Term entrants is January 19, 2010.
Students can
coordinate existing benefits with the UMSU plan and enroll a spouse or
dependants for an additional fee. For information
about purchasing family coverage please contact the UMSU Health & Dental
Office.
Please
note... if you are a Graduate student who registers later than September 23,
2009 or January 19, 2010 you will need to contact the UMSU Health & Dental
office in order for your Green Shield Account to be activated.
