U-Pass opt-outs are CLOSED and applications will no longer be accepted for this Academic Year.
The deadline to submit the completed opt-out application and required documents for the Fall Term was 4:00 pm Thursday, September 22, 2016. The deadline to submit the completed opt-out application and required documents for the Winter Term was 4:00 pm Wednesday, February 1, 2017.
Students who have successfully opted-out under criteria A (commute from outside the City of Winnipeg boundaries) for the Fall term do not need to re-apply for the Winter term. If your opt-out application was approved for the Academic Year, the Winter U-Pass fee will be removed after the course revision deadline.
In future, you may be eligible to opt-out from the U-Pass if you meet one of the criteria listed below and provide acceptable supporting documentation.
A. Commute to University from a residence outside the City of Winnipeg boundaries:
Students must provide two (2) documents with matching name and address as proof of residence outside city limits, as well as a guarantor who can verify the student commutes to campus from the stated residence:
The primary document must be ONE of: valid driver's license, motor vehicle registration, or enhanced identification card containing the student's name and address.
The second document must be ONE of: statement or bill in the student's name containing their current address (e.g. utility bill, bank statement) and issued within the preceding thirty (30) days. The second document must be from a different source than the primary document - MPI bills, statements, or letters will not be accepted as a second document. IF a student does not receive mailed statements, a printed copy of the online statement containing the relevant information would be accepted.
The guarantor section of the opt-out application form must contain the first and last name, contact number, relationship to the student, and signature of an individual who lives with the student or can verify that the student commutes to campus from the stated residence.
B. Registered with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind:
Students must show their valid CNIB card.
C. Employee of Winnipeg Transit:
Students must provide a letter from their employer on official letterhead.
D. Participating in a cooperative work program for sixty (60) or more days in a Term:
Students must provide their detailed Aurora Fee Statement showing assessment of work term / co-op fees, and provide a letter from their co-op program clearly indicating the start and end dates of their work term.
*Note: Practicum work placements are NOT considered equivalent to a cooperative work program for the purposes of opting-out of the U-Pass.
E. Studying outside of Canada for sixty (60) or more days in a Term:
Students must provide a letter from their program clearly indicating the start and end dates and location of their studies.
F. Participating in an internship or conducting research outside the City of Winnipeg boundaries for sixty (60) or more days per term, as part of a program of studies according to the University's records:
Students must provide a letter from their program on official letterhead, clearly indicating the start and end dates and location of their internship or research.
G. Valid U-Pass from another Post-Secondary institution located within Winnipeg:
Students must provide a detailed fee statement from the other Post-Secondary institution clearly showing the U-Pass fee.
H. Handi-Transit User:
Students must show their valid Handi-Transit card.
All applications and supporting documentation must be received during the opt-out period for the appropriate Term.
